5 Picture Books for Summer Fun & New Beginnings

Today I spent part of the morning at a friend's house helping her get ready for a big move. To my surprise, she’ll be living in Florida in just a few weeks. She was telling me that everything happened so fast, and of course, summer is the perfect time to make a move like this.

As I drove home, I thought about how much change summer can bring. A school year ends. Old routines disappear. Families move. Vacations are planned. Even the kids seem to get taller during the summer months 😊

There seems to be a little more room to think during the summer. A little more space to ask ourselves what matters most to us and where we'd like to go next. Ironically, it can be a season for slowing down and making changes at the same time.

Of course, adults aren't the only ones navigating change. Children experience it too. So I started looking for picture books to share with families this summer. Picture books that are perfect for road trips, quiet afternoons, and all the adventures in between. Books that can entertain, make us laugh, help children navigate change, and celebrate all the excitement that summer can bring.

Here are some of my favorites:

  1. New House, Same Underwear by Brenda Li is a funny and engaging book about moving, friendship, and new beginnings. I loved the simple and expressive illustrations. It's a great summer read for children navigating a big change.

  2. Let's Go on a Plane Ride! by Kathrina Liu is about a child taking his first plane ride. I love that it helps children know what to expect and prepares them for the experience. The author does a great job of keeping young readers engaged, and it's a perfect summer read for families with an upcoming trip.

  3. I see Summer by Charles Ghigna is a sweet introduction to summer experiences. I love the bright and cheerful illustrations, and I think it's a perfect read-aloud for toddlers excited about the summer season.

  4. This Little Piggy Had Waffles by Megan Baxter is a funny spin on the classic nursery rhyme that is sure to make kids giggle. This book reminded me of This Is a Moose by Richard T. Morris. It's a fun read-aloud with beautiful illustrations and plenty of silly moments. A great choice for families looking for a book that will make everyone laugh.

  5. This Book Is Viral! by Ron Keres is a hilarious and sweet interactive book. The author does a great job of keeping readers engaged and making them part of the story. I love the bold and funny personality of the main character. This is a great choice for families looking for a read-aloud that will have everyone laughing.
