4 Picture Books to Read Before the First Day of School

I can't believe school is about to start here in Texas!

This time of year makes me think about the first time I took my oldest daughter to preschool. I was devastated. Granted, I was also pregnant with my twins, so there may have been a few extra emotions involved. 😊

I still remember dropping her off in her little classroom and crying by the door. Meanwhile, she was completely ready. She was so excited about her big-girl lunchbox and her nap mat!

The school director saw me standing there and kindly took me to her office to console me. Looking back, I think that first day may have been harder for me than it was for my daughter.

I'm sure I'm not the first—or the last—mom to go through something like this, so I thought I'd ask around and see how other parents handle these big transitions. A friend recently told me that she did a lot of role-playing with her son before he started school. They practiced little moments he might experience throughout the day, and she felt it helped both of them with the transition. I loved that idea.

And, of course, reading picture books together can be another wonderful way to start conversations about what school might be like and how our little ones are feeling about it.

So, I want to share four picture books I love for this time of year, including two of my own.

  1. The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

Perfect for: Children who may be feeling nervous about saying goodbye on the first day.

  2. The Invisible String by Patrice Karst

Perfect for: Reminding little ones that we can still feel connected to the people we love when we're apart.

  3. Penelope's Big Dream by Monica Vidalon

Perfect for: Encouraging children to believe in themselves and keep dreaming, even when others doubt them. This can be especially important as children step into new experiences.

  4. Charlotte's Quest by Monica Vidalon

Perfect for: Noticing the little moments of joy along the way—a lovely reminder during the busy back-to-school season.

It's been many years since that preschool morning, but I can still picture my daughter walking into her classroom with her lunchbox, completely ready for her new adventure.

As I've learned through the years, this is also part of the back-to-school season. My kids' elementary school even hosts a Tears and Cheers event for parents to help them through this transition.

I'd love to hear: Is there a book your family loves during back-to-school season? Or something that has helped make those first days a little easier? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,
Mónica
